...February 2003... The 2003 AGM The Coalition's AGM will be held on the 11th and 12th of April in Antigonish, NS at the Keating Millennium Centre at St. Francis Xavier University. This AGM is organized with the help of the Canadian Institute for Children's Health and St. Francis Xavier University. The theme of the meeting will be Children's Health and the Environment. Registration is $20 for NGOs and Students and $40 for others. You can find the registration form at www.coalition-sgsl.ca/main/docs.htm. Space is limited though and we've set the deadline for registrations on March 31st so act quickly. Registrations can be sent by mail, fax or email to the following address: ...January 2003... New newsletter The SGSL Messenger is published simultaneously in English and in French and for the moment is only 4 pages thick. It aims at informing the stakeholders of the SGSL on problems of social, economical and environmental order that weigh on the area and prevent the sustainability of the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. In the next issues, the SGSL Messenger will raise your awareness of the Coalition, its composition, its members, its mission, its objectives and its strategies. The SGSL Messenger will also talk about the geography of the SGSL, its potentials, its riches, their exploitations and the various problems that ensue. Together we will also take on themes like, the exploitation of halieutic resources, agriculture, industries, maritime and land ecosystem health in the SGSL. The conservation of water and soil, water polluting sources, tourism and leisure, as well as globalization and the local economy of the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence will also be brought up. An Announcement and contribution column to be entirely dedicated to readers will be created for your contributions and theme propositions. ...August 2002... New EmployeesAfter the departure of two year long Coordinator Marie-Jose Maillet, it was important for the Coalition to find a new coordinator. Not wanting to rush into things, the Management Committee felt that, then Assistant Coordinator, Brigitte Julien could very well fill in for the time being. As time went on and feeling that an official coordinator would be needed but feeling that Brigitte was doing pretty nice work, the job was posted and Brigitte was invited to apply for the position. Over 20 candidates applied for the position of coordinator of the Coalition and of those, six were selected to pass an interview. Most interviews were done early the first day of the 2002 AGM. After careful consideration and an interesting job offer, career-wise, Brigitte stepped back from the competition. From the remaining candidates, Mathieu David Vautour was selected and has been acting as Coordinator to the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Coalition on Sustainability since April 28th.
At the same time, Sarah Mubareka who was the GIS Mentor for the Sustainable Communities Initiative project gave notice of her intents to pursue her studies in Italy and hence her resignation from the Coalition. After a less arduous hunt for a replacement mentor, Inuk Simard was selected for the position of GIS Mentor until the end of the contract in early January 2003, hes been working with us since May 1st. Its a new year, well a financial one anyway, and new partnership agreements are being signed for the coming year. Our financial year at the Coalition stretches from April 1st to March 31st therefore the budget and the agreements are all set on that timeline. So far the Coalition is negotiating joint projects with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada. Letters of agreement are almost done and signed and financial matters settled too. No attempt has yet been made to renew the SCI project with Natural Resources Canada but all will come in due time. The present agreement with NRCan is set to end January 1st 2003. The 2001 Management Committee along with its Steering Committee and their members have been hard at work last year and they produced a significant Strategic Plan spanning 20 years from 2002 to 2022. The Communication Working Group has also been hard at work the past year. They hired a professional graphic designer to come up with a logo for the Coalition and she came up with what you see on our web page, letterheads and business cards. This logo was selected from almost 20 different submissions from the designer. Our new look will be adapted to folders that we had printed and any other publication or promotional material that the Coalition might need. On top of that, our web site was updated a few times and following version Beige our final version Local Photography has just been put up and is ready for your enjoyment at www.coalition-sgsl.ca
On June 19th the Canadian Oceans Strategy Workshop for the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence will be held in Moncton on the Universit de Moncton campus in room 142 of the Law Faculty. This workshop is organised by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans of Canada and the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Coalition on Sustainability. It is intended to be a feedback session on the Canadian Oceans Strategy. Everyone is invited please contact Marie Daigle to confirm your presence or for any questions (506) 851-7780 or . From Wednesday evening June 19th to June 21st the Ocean Management and Research Network will organize a workshop titled Science and Local Knowledge: Making the Linkages Work in Canadas MPAs.
